Breed history
The Donskoy first appeared in Russia, in the Rostov region, in the 1980s. A woman named Irina Kovaleva discovered a blue-cream cat on the street, abused by children. She took her in but found that her little protege began to lose her hair as she grew older.
Then, this cat named Varya gave birth to several kittens, which all had the particularity of being naked. Irina Kovaleva decided to discover this genetic peculiarity that was unrelated to the mutation of the Sphynx. A breeding program then saw the light of day. The Donskoy became a breed of cat in its own right.
The Donskoy is, like the Sphynx, one of the only breeds of hairless cats in the world. It is therefore easily identifiable.
